چکیده

Vesicles, also known as liposome, are bilayers of lipid molecules enclosing a fluidic media. Vesicles can be formed by spontaneous assembling of phospholipid bilayer separating two different solvent media. Alternatively, vesicles can be formed as solid supported membranes. Such vesicles have potential in understanding the structural and other properties of cellular membranes and utility in targeted drug delivery systems and bio-sensors. In this paper, we have demonstrated an L-DEP based on-chip, vesicle dispensing scheme capable of dispensing a population of identically sized, large unilamellar vesicles and furthermore deposition of lipid bilayer onto polystyrene microbeads in order to produce biofunctional membranes.

Vesicle Libraries – Tools for Dielectrophoresis Metrology

We demonstrate the use of phospholipid vesicle electroformation techniques [1] to develop a new class of metrology tools for systems leveraging dielectrophoresis (DEP) to manipulate, pattern, and sort micron-scale particles. These cell-sized phospholipid vesicles, commonly called giant unilamellar vesicles or GUVs, possess specifically engineered electrical properties and thus exhibit identifia...

Inkjet formation of unilamellar lipid vesicles for cell-like encapsulation.

Encapsulation of macromolecules within lipid vesicles has the potential to drive biological discovery and enable development of novel, cell-like therapeutics and sensors. However, rapid and reliable production of large numbers of unilamellar vesicles loaded with unrestricted and precisely-controlled contents requires new technologies that overcome size, uniformity, and throughput limitations of...

Supported lipid bilayer microarrays created by non-contact printing.

Arrays of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) provide great potential for future drug development and multiplexed biological research, but are difficult to prepare due to the sensitivity of both the lipid and protein structural arrangement to air exposure. A novel way to produce arrays of SLBs is presented based on non-contact dispensing of vesicles to a substrate through a thin surface confined wa...

Rapid enrichment of biomolecules using simultaneous liquid and particulate dielectrophoresis.

Here we show that dielectrophoretic (DEP) liquid actuation can be used to dispense arrays of nanoliter-sized droplets loaded with biomolecules. Size-based enrichment of these biomolecules occurs rapidly and simultaneously with the droplet dispensing. The physical mechanism responsible for the effect is the positive DEP force directed toward the electrodes that is imposed by the non-uniform elec...

Chip Formation Process using Finite Element Simulation “Influence of Cutting Speed Variation”

The main aim of this paper is to study the material removal phenomenon using the finite element method (FEM) analysis for orthogonal cutting, and the impact of cutting speed variation on the chip formation, stress and plastic deformation. We have explored different constitutive models describing the tool-workpiece interaction. The Johnson-Cook constitutive model with damage initiation and damag...
